Installation Considerations for Sand Traps

In the installation of water management systems for rainwater and stormwater, apart from pipes and fittings, there are also other devices and contraptions which are to be installed. One of these is the sand trap which serves the important function of filtering out the particle matter from the wastewater to allow only clean water to be filtered into the main drains. Thus, a sand trap prevents blockage in the system for smooth functionality. In the installation of a sand trap, some considerations must be kept in mind, which are as follows:

1. Before the installation of the sand trap, it is important to determine the height of the outlet and the location. Subsurface and surface level installations will require different preparations to be made for the sand traps. The surface must be adequately levelled for smooth flow of the wastewater without causing any obstructions.

2. The sand trap must be installed such that there is enough area for the catchment or the filter to be poured. Keep in mind the level of particle matter present in the wastewater in your area to choose the sand trap which can handle the quantity with efficiency.

3. When the installation of the sand trap is being done, it must be kept in mind that there is no space or gap between the trap and the outlet. There must be no crevices, which will reduce the risk of even the smaller particles from escaping the filter and reaching the drains.

4. Consider the flow rate of the sand trap when choosing one for installation in your area. Different models have different capacities for filtering the wastewater and depending on whether the trap is for individual domestic units or for large-scale installations, the appropriate size must be chosen.

5. In case the sand trap is to be installed in an area where the wastewater also contains significant amount of oil or grease, then it is advisable to install an oil and grease separator with the sand trap. This will prevent the oil from getting into the drains and leading to the scaling of pipes, affecting their functionality over time.
